Description of service
I had a real estate agent when I bought my home. The cost was covered by the seller at closing. I dealt with the agent while I was 3000 miles away.
Review of Service
I was looking for a place to move to in San Diego while I was still living in Chicago. I had no idea who to talk to, so I asked the local real estate office I'd used to buy the house I was living in. They have 'sister' agencies all over the country so they recommended a company for me to get a hold of. In fact, they actually called an agent out there, explained what I wanted, and gave the agent all the basic information. I then spoke to the agent on the phone. She sent me a package of about 20 different properties in my price range that met my specifications. She also had jotted notes on the listings, such as "good neighborhood" and things of that nature. I then chose 5 to look at when I flew out for a short visit. The agent was very flexible and worked around my schedule while I was there. I made an offer on a place!
Tips
Make sure your agent is someone you can trust. If you see a place and see some minor issues and bring them up, they should say they understand and take not that it's an issue for you when looking for future homes. Be careful if they try to sugar coat problems.
