The tops of the trees are 30+ feet up in the air, there's no way I'm going up there to prune them. Even if they are ratty looking. So even though it took a couple days to get a guy out, what with it being the beginning of the busy gardening season, and the price was a lot higher than I expected it to be ($50/tree! Madness! Almost $5/tree more than last season!), the end result of the lightening of my wallet and the tidying of my trees is entirely acceptable to me.

Don't do this yourself. Don't try to shimmy up a palm tree to cut away the debris yourself. And certainly don't do it alone. I've seen professionals do stupid stuff like lop off the tip of a finger with pruning shears, or end up hanging upside down in need of rescue from one of their coworkers. Killing yourself by slowly bleeding to death from your thumb while hanging upside down 30 feet in the air while you die of exposure has to be one of the least pleasant deaths I can imagine. Though I bet you'd make the news for a day or two. Hell of a way to become the talk of the town.
