Description of service
I live in Southern California and pay an annual membership to an auto club. It costs $71 for coverage of two people: $47 for the primary holder, and $24 for the secondary. The primary and secondary aren't married so I don't know if it would be cheaper for a married couple. Membership covers four free services per year. Services include: (1) tows if they are at most 7 miles between pick-up and drop-off spots, (2) unlocking the door if you lock yourself out, (3) bringing you gas if you run out, (4) jump starting your car if it dies, and (5) putting your spare tire on if you get a flat. I think that's all it covers; maybe there's more, but I've never needed anything else. These services apply whether you are the passenger or the driver, but you do have to be there to provide your membership card when the service person arrives.
I think, for about $100, you can upgrade to get more services per year and cover tows for a distance longer than 7 miles radius.
Also, while this is a Southern California-based club it can be used in Northern California and Hawaii. Those are my experiences. I assume you could use it in other states as well.
Review of service
I've never had a complaint. They're available 24 hours a day and generally arrive within 30 minutes or so of calling. Also, the service people that arrive are rather friendly and efficient -- I presume because they are contracting with this club and want to keep that business.
Tips
I've had this service for 30+ years. It doesn't cost that much and it really is a life saver if you ever get stuck. My tip is to buy the service and get some peace of mind when you drive!
