Description of service
Cashing a check at a bank. When the check is written off the same bank but I don't have a checking acct. with them.
Review of Service
I had just gotten my pay check, and proceeded to the bank that the check was written off figuring that I would not have to pay to cash it when I was cashing it at that bank. I walked up to the teller and told her that I would like to cash my check, she asked if I had a checking acct. with them and I told her know. She then very aggressively I might add tried to get me to open an acct. with them. I had refused several times, though she repeatedly continued to tell me the benefits of opening the acct. When she finally realized that I did not want a checking acct. at her bank she said, well it will be five dollars to cash it then. % dollars I couldn't believe it, my check was only for a few days work and totaled only 85 dollars. Why should I pay 5 dollars when I am only cashing a check for 85, I wondered. I told her no thank you then, and went to a huge department store and cashed it there for $1.97. Large chain departments stores generally cash checks for a a percentage rather then a stadard fee.
Tips
When cashing a check, try to find a place that has different prices for different kinds of checks. SSI or state checks generally are cashed for $3.00 regardless of the amount, where the cost to cash a payroll check is based on the amount of the check. ($500.00 check cashed for $2.50 or a $1000 check cashed for $5.00)
