Description of service
I had two career aptitude tests administered by a PhD pyschologist. The first test was a self-directed survey that I took at home and he interpreted for me. The second was a detailed multiple choice test that had to be sent out to an institution in Washington DC for grading. Both tests were basically a whole battery of questions asking how much you agreed with statements like "I would enjoy repairing a truck." Using some analytical techniques I don't really understand, the phychologist is able to classify your personality and abilities. Once they have your results, they can try to figure out what fields best fit you. All of this data was given to me in the form of a written report. I also discussed the results in person with the doctor.
Review of Service
The testing itself was kind of fun. That's because I'm the kind of person that enjoys answering those sorts of questions, you might not. Honestly, I'm not totally sure what to make of the results. I guess it's pretty common to go into a test like this thinking the results would be like some divine revelation that would just tell me in big flashing letters "THIS IS THE CAREER FOR YOU!" While some of the careers that my results suggest seem like I'd enjoy them, nothing has really popped out as an amazing fit. I was able to discuss hat concern with the psychologist, but I'm not sure that he was able to really clarify it to my satisfaction.
I think the people who created these tests did some good research, and are certainly well-intentioned. Unfortunately, you can't win 'em all. The results are certainly something for me to think about, but I can't say I'm blown away by the revelations.
Tips
Remember when you are going into career or vocational testing that you may not be amazed by the results. It's possible you will have a "eureka!" moment, but more likely it will be an "eh." Your results are just some tools to keep in mind when you are searching for your career. Ask the tester how much advice and counseling are included in the fee, since you may have more question than will be included.
