Description of service
The drivers side mirror assembly was damaged and had to be completely replaced so they had the cost of the part, the labor to install it, a shop charge and sales tax. No gratuity was issued. The part cost was approximately 60% of the actual total bill.
Review of Service
I choose to get the service at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle. While it is possible that a custom repair shop could have provided the service at a cheaper price I have a good relationship with them so I chose to get the service there despite possibly having a higher charge applied. This is because of the quality of the part, the quality of the service and the ability to have the service noted in the cars service record.
The main issue which I felt was not good about this service was that they recommended replacing the trim and seals (around door etc) at the same time. They were concerned that the seals would be leaking due to the damage (which was not the case) and rather strongly recommended replacement in what I feel in hindsight was more about the cost and labor of the replacement rather than the actual need for such replacement.
Tips
If you need a similar replacement consider:
1) is the part a quality part (manufacture quality, name brand etc)
2) is all work recommended direct and necessary based on the repair in question
or is it something the repair facility is trying to load onto the task in order
to benefit their bottom line.
3) be aware that the specific part needed may have to be ordered which can affect the time frame of the repair. I had to first have the repair evaluated, the part ordered and finally have the repair performed. This took approximately 1 week from my first visit.
