the Cost of Freelance Writers

A professional freelance writer ghost-wrote a short memoir I had of time I spent with my grandfather. I told him the story and he wrote it in my voice.

I was asked to contribute a 5,000 word essay on a special memory I had with my grandfather for a book that is being written about him and his contribution to a local school. Writing is not my strong suit so I hired a professional writer to write it. It turned out great. He kept the writing very simple, yet affecting. I felt bad when he was done that I got the by-line in the book but I guess that's what ghost writers do. The downside was that he did not get me a copy of the story until 2 days before it was due to the editor of the book so I had very little time to go over it and approve it.

Definitely get some previous examples of a writer's work before hiring them. Make sure they understand exactly what you want. If you want something written in simple terms, make sure they understand that. Get the contract in writing and if it's a ghost writing situation like this make sure they understand and are comfortable with that.
