Description of service
The price is for one month's remote monitoring of our home's existing security system (fire and intrusion monitoring, installed by the previous owners). The company also offers security assessments, installation of security systems -- including video surveillance and smoke/CO detectors -- and physical security devices like window grates and heavy duty locks, training on security system use, and maintenance (routine or emergency) of installed systems.
A variety of security systems and monitoring packages are available for residences; small, medium, and large businesses; and government facilities. Cost depends on installation size and the nature of the service/monitoring contract. For residences, installation starts at $300, and monitoring at $34/month and goes up depending on the complexity of the system and service.
Review of Service
We've never had to use it, either for burglary or fire or emergency, but simply having the monitored security system has reduced our homeowner's insurance premiums by more than the cost per month of the monitoring service. Albeit it's only about $10/month cheaper overall, but it's still $120/year we didn't have before.
Customer service has been excellent -- always polite and professional -- and we haven't gotten any false alarms since we installed the cat door. It took some getting used to once we first turned it on, but now that we're used to turning it off when we get home and on when we leave or go to bed, it's pretty simple.
Tips
Decide whether it's something you really need. If you live in a somewhat sketchy area, or you know for certain that a security system will significantly lower your homeowner's insurance, it's worth considering. Realize though that it can be a hassle and like all complicated systems an alarm system might not work out of the box without tweaking.
If you really want a home security system, look for one that's easy to use and understand, and remember that cheaper isn't necessarily better (nor is more expensive better for that matter).
Additionally, if all you want is the burglar-deterrence factor of an alarm system, consider just buying a few of those monitored alarm window stickers and yard signs. Studies show doing that is almost as effective as a full alarm system at deterring break-ins. And far cheaper. Alarm companies don't usually sell them, so you'll need to find an alternate source. Online auction sites are usually a good bet. But don't assume that simply by putting up the stickers that if your house does get broken into, the alarm company will come to your rescue.
