Description of service
The graphic design service that I used was run by students at a local educational institution. The students provided me with an initial consultation to determine what I was trying to convey with the message and flier that I wanted to design, and then were able to produce several mock-up designs that allowed me to select what I felt was the best of the bunch to print. The design that I chose out of the half dozen or so that were given to me was than finalized with custom photos, a clean design, and a variety of sizes. The group also printed a run of the flier on my choice of stock as an add-in on the price.
Review of Service
The service was much better than I had anticipated. There was very little stress involved in the process of developing the design, and the group was quick to provide any suggestions that they may have had for certain areas that may have been lacking or that I was unsure as to how to fix or make look like it was professionally developed. The opportunity to see different variations of what I wanted to have printed was definitely a plus, as was the final flier printing with custom photos that highlighted the venue and the participants.
Tips
For anyone interested in hiring a graphic design service, the first rule of thumb should be to ensure that they have a reputation for being a good service. Look at a portfolio and see what they have done in the past if at all possible. Most good graphic design firms will also do as mine did and provide you with mock-ups of a number of designs. Ensure that you have some creative control, but do listen to the suggestions of the designers, particularly on something that you may not have the best idea about. Most importantly, ensure that you can see the final product before it gets printed, so that any last minute edits can be made without incurring additional costs on your end.
