Description of service
Underarm waxing
$11.00 for the waxing
$4.00 for the tip (I gave a bigger tip than usual only because it was the Christmas season. Normally, a tip of $2.00 is enough for this service.)
Review of Service
I went to a small salon in New York City that only has two to three staff at any given time. Fortunately, I came in at an off-peak hour (7 PM on a weekday, which was an hour before closing time) so I was attended to immediately. There is a private room for waxing so you don't have to worry about taking your top off. The bed is covered with disposable sheets, which they replaced when I went in, so I assume that each customer gets a fresh one.
The salon uses hot wax with a fragrant smell and thick cloth strips that take off a lot of hairs so the waxing process did not take long - 10 minutes maximum. The waxer was very thorough. After waxing, she cleaned the remaining tiny stray hairs by threading them. I also liked that they asked me whether I wanted oil or powder applied after waxing instead of automatically doing so. This is important for me because I prefer powder, instead of the usual oil, since I don't want to get my top oily.
The salon has a frequent guest card, which gives you a free waxing after your 10th visit. Even though the salon is tiny, it has a comfortable waiting area with current magazines to read while you wait and also has a toilet for customers' use.
Tips
Make sure that the hair on your underarms is long enough to attach to the wax. Otherwise, having the procedure done might be a waste of time.
Ask if the salon offers combination packages that will save you money. It may be cheaper to have two procedures on the same visit (e.g., underarm & bikini wax) instead of having them done separately.
Ask if the salon has a frequent guest card which gives you freebies (such as a free or discounted procedure) after you've accumulated enough points.
