Description of service
10 Capoeira lessons by a master capoeira dancer. Lessons were taught in a group of about 10 people and included music instruments and live music. We were taught the history and origins of this art form and encouraged to jump right in. We were taught simple patterns on the pandeiro (frame drum) and even learned some basic notes on the Berimbau (gourd / string instrument) Classes were sometimes held outdoors weather permitting.
We stretched before every lesson and learned the basic moves and how to move with the rhythm. Often we would partner with someone similar in size to aid in the ease of learning.
Review of Service
All in all the was an amazing experience and I got to make a lot of new friends. I've continued learning in and out of the class room and have expanded my love for the music of Brazil as well! The teachers were so warm and easy going, and fun to learn from. It was a surprise at first because Capoeira is considered a martial art to many, but these lessons had none of the regimented stiffness that happens in Karate, Judo etc. I would highly recommend this activity for anyone who wants to stretch themselves and try something different, while at the same time getting in great shape and learning a few new instruments!
Tips
Just go in with an open mind and do everything slowly. You need patience because you will not ever have moved the way you move in Capoeira!
