Description of service
At this monthly service rate, we receive approximately 60 channels. Granted, about 5 of them are useless. In addition to local channels (NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX) this package also includes Disney, Nickelodeon, Discovery, ESPN, HGTV, and TLC to name a few. It is considered a basic tier package and more expensive ones are available that include HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime.
Review of Service
In our area, there are currently no competitive companies providing cable television service. Satellite television is of course an option, and possibly a viable one. There are new competitors slated for arrival soon.
In terms of service, I do not value the cable company's customer service or service provided. We have two channels that are included with our monthly cable package, but they are too "fuzzy" to watch. Our only option is to run the cable through our DVD player to clear it up. I am, of course, told by our cable provider that when everything goes digital this year that this will clear up once we either replace our television with a digital set or install the conversion box. I remain skeptical.
Sadly, I am dismayed by the lack of competition in the cable television business in this area. As I previously stated, things are subject to change soon and hopefully competition will not only increase the level of customer service received as companies compete for customers, but will also offer competitive pricing for the packages received. I would like to think that I could watch television for less than $1.00 per channel.
Tips
Carefully examine all viable options in your area, especially if there is competition in this market. Satellite is inconvenient for some based on location and type of equipment installed, but there will be more competitors in the cable television market this year, so compare all services and companies.
As long as none of the companies lock you in to a contract, it won't hurt to explore your options - a scenario that may become necessary when digital television is universal.
