When I opened a 401K I received a free consultation with a certified financial planner. I used this consultation to get advice on my retirement planning.
Review of Service
I'm fairly young and didn't know anything about retirement planning except that it was important. I hear on the news all the time about the collapse of social security and I wanted to make sure I was ready on my own when the time comes. The financial planner did a great job explaining all the information to me. He told me about the different types of retirement accounts out there. He told me about aggressive planning versus conservative planning. He told me how much I would need to save each paycheck to meet my goals. I learned about the pitfalls of borrowing against retirement funds. He also gave me a few booklets that summarized what we talked about so I could go over it later for further review. He also gave me information on the pricing plan in his company for future retirement planning.
Tips
If you have access to a consultation like this I would say to definitely go for it. It's a very important to plan for retirement and to understand how the process works.
