Description of service

When I signed up for my 401k with a former employer I was given the option to take advantage of a one time consultation for $100. This consultation was to make a plan for my retirement investment. The consultation took about 2 hours.

Review of Service

This was a good service but I'm not sure it was worth $100. At the time I was just beginning my professional career and didn't know a lot about financial planning or retirement. So I thought it'd be a good idea to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about my retirement options. I did learn a lot. I went into the consultation and basically knew nothing. I didn't know what edge I should be planning to retire at or how much money I'd need or how to figure out how much to save each month to reach whatever my goal was. The agent was very patient and we wrote out a list of goals to retire by the time I'm 65. He made a very specific plan and gave advice on whether to choose more or less aggressive options. So I learned a lot but I also think I'd have been able to find the information if I'd done a little research.

Tips

If you are a single person with no kids and a pretty straight forward goal these programs may not be worth it to you. It seems they'd be more valuable to a person with several incomes and several previous pensions or 401k programs.
