Description of service
I've had back and neck trouble since I was a kid, and I've been to a lot of chiropractors over the years. Their methods all vary slightly, but the goal is the same: relieve pain, promote healing and prevent disease.
When my headaches returned after a long respite, I was referred to a local chiropractor who was offering free exams to new patients. He took a complete medical history, including information about past accidents and chiropractic care. He observed my posture, my stride, my reflexes and the length of my arms and legs. He manually examined my spine, as well as many of my joints. He also tested my control of different muscles and my circulation. Finally, he took several low-radiation x-rays. This was all covered under the free exam.
When the cause of my headaches was determined, he began a course of treatment that included stretching, massage and spinal manipulation. After each manipulation, he recommended heat to keep the muscles relaxed. He also prescribed strengthening exercises. Unlike many chiropractors, he insisted that I continue with my medical doctor for important things like my thyroid and cholesterol levels.
Review of Service
I've never had a bad chiropractic experience, though some are better than others. This particular doctor made me feel comfortable. He educated me on my condition, and we worked together to get the best results possible.
Tips
Many insurances now cover chiropractic care, even without a referral from your primary care physician. If your insurance does not, however, be sure to shop around. Cost is not the only factor to consider. Be sure to talk to people. Find out how the chiropractor feels about traditional medicine, other non-traditional treatments, and patient participation in their own care. Another thing to discuss with the chiropractor before starting a course of treatment is the actual treatment plan. Find out what is expected of you and how long treatment will last. After all, if you are going to spend $35 to $50 per visit, you want to be sure your money is spent wisely.
