Description of service
My son's school teamed up with the community high school to offer tutoring for young children (grades 1-5) after school. The high school sent in students who volunteer for an hour each day to tutor young children in an elementary school. Basically about 3-4 children are assigned with one tutor who answers questions about homework.
Review of Service
I think this is just such an awesome idea. The program lasted just for two months though, and I wished they have extended it more. I also wish more schools would opt for this. It gives children a chance to finish their homework before coming home and ask questions to their older peers. My son was took advantage of this program and asked to pick him up an hour early which was okay with me. It gives motivation to children and not distract them with things like tv.
Tips
Ask your school if they offer a tutoring program. Perhaps parents can mention these ideas to teachers during parent/teacher meetings and the school may do something about it. It doesn't cost anything to anyone, just volunteer work for the betterment of the community. It's also very convenient knowing the school is being watched by teachers and students unlike personal tutors where the child may not be safe with a stranger.
