Description of service
I hired a recent college graduate for one-on-one math tutoring with an eighth grader at a cost of around $20/hr. The original price was slightly higher, but since the sessions were two hours, the tutor lowered her price a bit.
The tutor had past group tutoring experience, a background in math, but little one-on-one experience and was a liberal arts major. The tutor met with the student at a library once a week for a minimum of two hours, occasionally more. Special help was given to the learning process (tips and tricks for remembering, other ways to truly understand a problem and how the problem applied to real life) rather than just assisting the student with math homework (though that was done as well).
Review of Service
Overall, both student and tutor were satisfied with payment. The student's individual assistance helped their grade-- particularly the attention to detail the tutor had with the student. The tutor was flexible and able to do cancellations without charging. In addition the student was female (as was the tutor) and the student believed it was easier to learn from a female tutor.
Tips
Make sure to check out the pricing. Often more experienced tutors charge more. In addition, tutors are usually willing to lower their price if they know that they will get more hours. Finally, remember, its not just a service you are paying for its a person! Make sure that the tutor and student get along (to some extent) or the money might be better spent on a book regarding the subject,
