Description of service
After having my store, I decided to look into incorporating it. I contact a local lawyer who did small business work. His initial come in charge was $500. For this he would look at all my legal paperwork, my IRS forms for the last 2 years and help me decide what would be best for me. To see if I should continue to be sole proprietor or incorporate.
Review of Service
My initial appointment lasted about 45 minutes. I presented all the paperwork he had requested I bring to the meeting. He took about 15 minutes to look it over and then began to ask questions. The questions pertained to the number of employees I had, if I paid workers compensation, vacation etc. He looked over my Profit and Loss statements for the last 3 years and my income tax returns along with state returns. After talking we decided not to incorporate as my business was so small, my liabilities weren't that great. Becoming a corporation was not my best option. He did give me good pointers on running a small business and what I needed for the legal aspects of the company. His $500 fee I feel was high until he said that if I retained him for legal purposes, his fee would only be $250 for this appointment. I did retain him.
Tips
Always check out lawyers with the Bar Association and even the Better Business Bureau. Ask friends and other business owners for referrals. Get their opinion.
