I am currently having my son's last name changed. He is three years old and has my maiden name however we are trying to give him his father's last name. I had to pay $500 in court costs, $150 in court costs, and $150 for a separate lawyer for my son. Although I think the process is ridiculous and expensive I was lucky. Many price quotes that I received for this process were a minimum of $200 more.
Review of Service
The service I received has been ok. The paper work has been filed and the court date scheduled. I feel that I was rushed however in the office. I wasn't even given time to finish filling out the paperwork. I was given it, sent home, told to fill it out, and bring it back in later.
Tips
I think that it is important to call many lawyers in your area and receive price quotes. There are different rules in each state that may cause it to cost more or less. Different lawyers also charge many different prices. It is also important to find out first if you need a separate lawyer for your child. Many judges want to make sure the name change is beneficial to the child.
