Description of service
Couples counseling for one session. Insurance paid most of it; we had a $25 co-pay. Without insurance it's about $85-95 per session, about an hour.
Review of Service
Before you go, do some research on couples counseling, or whatever you're going for. I did not know there were different kinds of treatments. Our counselor was just ok. Easy to talk to and a great listener, but she offered no homework or exercises or gave us suggestions on how to get through our problems. Basically, we got there, sat in the waiting room for about 5 minutes and then went into the "therapy room." By the looks of it, she must be more pediatric oriented because there were los of kids toys around and it seemed very kid friendly. Once in there, she asked us why we were there and from that point on, she just asked very minimal questions and listened. I was hoping for some type of advice on working through our issues, but she really didn't offer any.
Tips
Do some research about different types of counseling before you make an appointment. Apparently the type of therapy we went to does not offer advice or suggestions. But cognitive behavioral therapy does, so that is our next type of therapy.
When you call to make the appointment, find out if your insurance covers it. If money is an issue, they should be able to tell you before you go in what you will be responsible for. Ask if they have a certain way of treating patients and find out what would be the best way to treat your problem. Hopefully they will give you honest advice and find someone else for you if they don't think they could help you. Don't worry or dread going. Sometimes just getting to talk about your problem helps you feel a little better about it.
