Description of service
Replaced head gasket and related parts, including new engine oil and coolant, to fix increasingly bad oil/coolant leakage in engine. Total parts (including new gasket set, new spark plug seals, engine oil, coolant, crankshaft seals and timing belt idlers) cost $518 and labor was $927.
Review of Service
Service was performed expertly and was within the terms of the original estimate. Minor problems discovered during the repair were brought to owner's attention and repaired without increasing original budget. Subaru Forester ran perfectly subsequent to the repair, without leaking further oil or coolant, despite the engine having considerable mileage. Service center was clean and pleasant, and staff were attentive to customer's needs and schedule.
Tips
Work with a mechanic you trust as this repair can sometimes be delayed for several thousand miles. If your mechanic identifies a similar problem but believes it safe to continue operating your vehicle, make sure the situation is reevaluated each time you get an oil change. As the head gasket is difficult to replace and requires exposure of other difficult engine systems, if you engage a mechanic to complete a head gasket system repair, consider replacing other parts, which are difficult to access normally but will be exposed while working on the head gasket (ask your mechanic to examine potentially worn parts they may be able to access while working on the head gasket).
