Description of service
My laptop is two years old and I use it almost every day. Of course I didn't buy the extended warranty, it's the highest ranked brand and I didn't think anything would ever go wrong.
A week ago, it "broke". When I opened the lid and turned it on, I got a black screen with an error message that Windows could not be installed.
I took it to the computer "store" (he only does repairs, doesn't sell anything, unless there's something you want, then he can get it at a huge discount compared to what you would pay in a big-box store or from your manufacturer) that's in the strip mall where my shop is. He said my hard drive failed and with parts, labor, and tax it would be $170.00
Review of Service
This repair guy is a real trip. I think he lives in the back of the store. His hours are "whenever my sign says 'open'". It's always what one would consider "regular business hours", but I've driven by there on a Sunday night and the signs lights up the strip mall "open".
The repair work took two days (he told me three, but the part he needed came in a day early).
He added to my desktop screen some features I didn't even know I had. He showed me some shortcuts that I didn't know were available. He also gave me some tips that have already proved to be very helpful.
It works like a charm now, even better than before.
Tips
Find a repair shop. Don't send to the manufacturer or take it to the big-box store where you got it. Every town has a computer geek that LOVES to work on computers. Find him - make him your best friend.
