Description of service
I took a beginning cake decorating class offered at a local craft store. The cake decorating class cost $25 for 4 sessions over the course of 4 Saturday mornings. Each class lasted two hours.
The class was taught by a certified cake decorator. My class had 12 participants, including myself. On our first day, we were given books on all the different techniques covered over the course. We were also given a free starter kit containing two piping bags, six decorating tips, washers, a spatula, a decorating board, and a paintbrush. We had to buy other materials for the course to supplement our free starter kit.
Over the course I learned how to pipe rosettes, flowers, stars, leaves, and shells. By the end of the course I felt confident with my basic cake decorating skills. My cakes had that professional touch to them because I knew how to make all the different designs. They also had intermediate and advanced courses, but I didn't sign up for them.
Review of Service
I enjoyed my class a lot. I liked that the classes were small. Because of this, the instructor was able to help each of us individually with our piping skills. She had time to come up and adjust your hands so you could do the proper designs. I think for the number of contact hours, this was an excellent course. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes to cook or wants to make elegant cakes!
Tips
National and local craft stores are the best places to look for cake decorating courses. Many culinary schools offer them, too, but at a much higher price because they're aimed at professionals.
