Description of service
We use a local, college aged nanny to watch after our children on occasional nights out. She will generally come a half hour prior to our departure to give the kids some adjustment time, and is more than capable of managing their needs. We pay her 15 and hour and occasionally tip 20 to 30 percent.
Review of Service
Our nanny is great. Before ever using her, she made time to come over and develop a relationship with our children. She came highly recommended and has always gone far beyond her duties to ensure we enjoy ourself and really relax when we go out. There have been times when she cleaned or did other helpful tasks without being asked and it really made us like her. The kids trust her and she seems to be able to manage them almost better than us.
Tips
Theres nothing more important than checking references for babysitters. Find and personally meet (not just a phone call) other families who have used her service and make sure of their abilities and good judgment. Giving the kids some time before we leave the house to transition into "babysat" mode makes a big difference to, so find someone who is ok coming early. Also, try and respect the clear line of giving appropriate notice. Do not call the night before, and NEVER try and guilt your nanny into a particular time. Be respectful, especially when you find one you like.
