Description of service
When I moved to this city, there weren't a lot of options as far as high-speed or cable internet providers. This provider is a locally run service, run by the same company that provides electricity and cable television for the city. I don't remember how much it was to buy the cable modem and get the service set up, because that was about four years ago, but the service is $41 per month.
Review of Service
The service is, frankly, lousy. There are frequent outages when I have to either live without internet service or try to use the neighbor's unsecured wireless connection (I really do try not to do that, but sometimes I'm desperate). Sometimes unplugging the modem and plugging it in again solves the problem, although I have no idea why, and sometimes it doesn't.
The only reason I haven't switched is out of laziness - the service really is pretty bad. Also, I think I'm paying too much. Although prices are high around here, I think I should get better service for $41 a month.
Tips
I don't know how you could possibly find out beforehand, but if there's any way to find out how frequent outages are, find out! I was really surprised - and not in a good way - to discover how frequently I would lose service.
I share the bill with my housemate, so I'm really only paying $20.50 per month, which is probably why I haven't changed. See if you can share internet service with anyone who lives in your house, as it will make things much cheaper.
