Review of Service
I was very impressed and happy with the service. The instructor was an 8th degree black belt in Jiu Jitsu and judo, who has sponsored many people for competition. He was very patient and effective in his teaching. First, the taught us how to take falls properly to avoid injuries. Then we went over some basic choke-holds and learned how to take an opponent down effectively. Next, we went over basic throws and grappling techniques. We were taught how to position ourselves to use our lower body strength to throw the opponent off of us when we grappled. Special strategies for women's self defense were discussed in detail. The instructor would first demonstrate the technique with all of us watching. He then told us to pair up and we practiced the techniques together. The instructor would come around frequently to provide us with individual suggestions and tips for how to do the techniques better. Afterwards, we had a freestyle session where we could practice the moves in more detail. I learned a lot and will be coming back to the school for more instruction.
Tips
I would highly recommend looking at the Jiu Jitsu schools in Altoona, PA. You will find excellent instruction there. Also, many schools will let you watch a class for free and it is a very good idea to do this before you actually participate. Find out beforehand what kind of clothing is best to wear on the mat.
