The price covered an hour-long consultation with a practicing attorney at a firm that specializes in tax law.
As a tax attorney firm, they perform a variety of services from helping set up tax shelters, to providing counsel during IRS audits. Time is billed at $110 per hour per lawyer (goes up or down depending on the experience of the lawyer(s) hired) plus expenses, if any.
Review of Service
It was a private matter, one I thought could be handled without a lawyer present just by using documentation. Five minutes into the initial meeting, I realized I was not only wrong but way out of my depth, and so I sought counsel immediately.
Once I did, life became a lot easier for me. Sometimes I wonder whether lawyers are worthwhile or simply hobgoblins of an obnoxious system. Either way, I can't overstate how useful a competent attorney is in dealing with the government.
Tips
Ah, lawyers. There are so many different types these days that you have to make sure you're going to the right one. Usually you want a firm that specializes in the area you have a problem.
Public defenders are usually marginally competent and only really available once criminal charges are filed. Public prosecutors are scary and have political ambition.
