When I was ready for my second tattoo I wanted to go to a very well known studio and use the services of an artist that came highly recommended by friends.
The service was very professional, the tattoo parlor was immaculate and smelled more like a hospital than anything. I went several days before hand to talk to the artist about my particular tattoo idea and make sure that we were on the same page, he drew up some sketches for me that day and we agreed on one to finalize.
The day of my tattoo I arrived back, we briefly reviewed everything we'd agreed on and went to work.
The actual procedure was positive, I enjoyed the new sensations and he took his time with only two short breaks. This is not something to rush!
Afterwards I left with verbal and written instructions for aftercare and was told I could come back anytime for touch-ups or that I could call or drop in with questions.

Great!
I couldn't be happier with the work I had done. Choosing a more "adult" shop that focuses more on personalized art instead of "flash" is the only way to go.
Tips
Shop around not for price but for quality. Make sure you see actual on the skin examples and ask to look at photos. You have your whole life to look at the final result, take some time getting there.
