Description of service
The price quoted above was the out of pocket copay cost for a reconstructive nose job procedure through my insurance company. Had the procedure not been covered by insurance, it would have been $5000.
The plastic surgeon shares a practice with several other plastic surgeons. They do mostly the usual cosmetic surgery stuff like boob jobs and face lifts and botox and the like, but sometimes they do reconstructive work as well.
Review of Service
I got into a lot of fights as I grew up and my nose was broken at least three or four times. It healed into a misshapen mass that was difficult to breathe through. When I finally went to see a surgeon. I expected to have to pay full price, but he informed me the procedure would be covered by insurance if all I wanted was improved function. I'm not sure if that was entirely true or not, but I was only concerned about being able to breathe since I kind of like the way my nose looks.
Anyway, the surgery was easy. Didn't eat for a day, went to the hospital, went to sleep, woke up with pain in my nose, got drugs, went home. My sense of smell went away for about a week, which freaked me out a bit. But it came back good as ever. Better, in fact, because I could breathe properly.
Tips
High prices don't necessarily mean a competent surgeon and the before and after picture books are usually culled to show only the best results. If you can in your area, find out how many outstanding complaints and malpractice suits they have against them. While its unlikely a doctor will have none these days, fewer is definitely better. Also, find out what the MD is willing to do to fix problems that come up.
