the Price of Renting an SUV

Rentals on the island of St. John are all 4-wheel drive vehicles, because of the steep and winding roads. My rental vehicle was a 2006 4-door silver Jeep Liberty with power steering, automatic transmission, power locks and windows. The cost also included $10/day collision insurance. There was a $100 deposit that was applied to the full charge, which was payable upon pick up of the vehicle.

Very good. The vehicle was clean, and well-maintained. It had a few dings and scrapes, but that is standard for a car on St. John. The Liberty handled the St. John roads very well at all times. The employees of the rental company were friendly, laid-back, and explained all charges clearly.

Renting a car on St. John is a different experience, but not hard at all. It is very difficult to bring a car from another island to St. John, so you almost have to rent on the island. The prices from one company to the next are very similar, as are the vehicles. You need to book your vehicle *well* in advance, at least 3 months, or there may be nothing available on the island.

People are very friendly and trusting; if you arrive after hours, they will leave the keys in the car, and you can come back the next day to fill out paperwork.
