Description of service
The service is for a boy's haircut at a barber that specializes in men's haircuts. Other services available include, obviously, men's haircuts at $25, a shoe shine for $5, and a facial hair trim for $7 or shave for $10. In between haircuts the barber will do a "tune-up" that involves shaving the neck and cleaning up the sideburns at no cost to customers. A full kit including wash, cut, shave, shoe shine is $35, and special rates are available for large groups such as wedding parties.
They sell the usual compliment of hair grooming products, and though they don't do women's cuts and styles the barbers can recommend several places with reasonable prices that do.
Review of Service
It's a great place, like a modern and up-scale version of an old-time barber shop. They used to, so I'm told, allow smoking and even sell cigars, but that was before the city-wide smoking ban for businesses. I'm sad they don't have the choice to let people smoke in there anymore, but I'd have to say I'd hesitate to go there if the owners did allow smoking.
My son always comes away from there smiling and I've never felt the need to direct the barber's efforts on my son's hair because the barber's always managed to keep his hair stylish.
Tips
Look for a busy shop, and one that's open fairly late in the day on weekdays and open Saturdays and Sundays. The busy shop points to satisfied customers who recommended the shop to their friends and came back themselves.
A barber that prides him or herself on keeping their skills up-to-date is always a plus, and so is a lot of experience, but the willingness to take on apprentices is a little-known sign of a master barber. Expect the senior barbers to have mediocre (and very short) haircuts themselves while they're training apprentices.
