Description of service
After my daughter was introduced to the violin at school, she wanted to take lessons so we rented a violin and hired a teacher to come to our house for one hour per week. The cost was $40 for the hour, plus we had some one-time costs to buy some music books and other materials for her to use.
Review of Service
We found the violin teacher through a referral from a friend, and he turned out to be a pretty good technical instructor but he didn't connect very well with my daughter. She became less interested in the violin over time, partly because the excitement of a new activity wore off but also because the violin is difficult to learn and it takes a long time to be able to play even a simple piece of music. The teacher was patient and the cost of the service was expensive but other instructors that we considered charged close to that same amount, so it is a fair price. He had a lot of experience teaching violin and gave her good ideas and support, but eventually she gave up on it. We have recommended him to other friends and students because he does a good job and has the right temperament for the service.
Tips
Don't invest in purchasing any instruments; it is much better to rent and be able to return it if your child no longer wants/needs it. Try to find an instructor through a referral because that helps you know that someone else in a similar situation was pretty satisfied with the teacher. Also sit in on the first lesson and a few others along the way just so you have a sense of the teaching style and your child's interest.
