I paid a criminal defense lawyer to go to court with me on about 100 bad checks. He negotiated with the prosecutor and the judge for me to pay the checks and serve probation instead of going to prison because I was a student.

The lawyer did a really good job negotiating a good deal with the prosecutor and getting the judge to approve of the arrangement. He explained all of my options and helped me with the paperwork for me to move out of state after the arrangement was in place.

Hire a good lawyer with good references, preferably from people that you know who have used him or her for problems of their own. He needs to be in good standing with other attorneys in the area so that he can work out a better deal with them on your behalf, the prosecutor will not want to make a good deal with someone that they already don't like. For you to find a lawyer like this it will probably cost you a little more than calling the first one you see in the phone book but the extra expense is worth it if it can help you to avoid going to prison for several years or at least get your time cut as low as possible.
