Description of service
Replace driver's side window that cracked. The motor that would roll the window glass up and down wasn't able to do so very well due to the glass having a crack in it. The cost of the glass itself wasn't very much since it was from a junk yard that the glass repairman went to while I waited at his shop. It was $30. The labor and taxes brought it up to $130. The labor included the time and effort spent going to the junk yard and looking for and pulling the part.
Review of Service
The initial quote was $90, but when the repairman opened the inside of the driver's side door and found all the cracked glass, he raised the price. It both did and didn't seem fair. On the one hand, he had to do some extra work to ensure that no pieces of glass remained in the door or went into the motor assembly, chain, pulley, etc. On the other, he had been doing this for some time and, given the situation at hand, should have been able to give a proper estimate the first time. His demeanor was such that bargaining was out of the question, so I ended up paying what he asked for.
Tips
The best thing to do is to shop around just like you would for anything else. I was short on time, so I couldn't do too much of that. Also, get a referral from someone other than your mechanic around the corner. It seemed like he had a cut of the price I paid going to him. Just a feeling, but nonetheless something I couldn't disregard. Don't do this on a rainy day!
