Description of service
My parents have been on dial up for years and live too far out for DSL internet services. I was already on a waiting list for another satellite internet provider, but wanted to go ahead and get my parents set up on a satellite system so they could keep in touch with their far flung friends and family without having to continue suffering through dial up. Actually, I was afraid that they would cancel even their dial up because they were so frustrated with the slowness of it.
For $400 I had their satellite internet service installed and set up. There is a recurring monthly charge of $59.99 per month plus taxes for their monthly usage, which I have set up to come straight out of my checking account.
Review of Service
My parents are ecstatic about being able to fully experience the internet now. I think the upfront cost to have the service installed and the recurring monthly fee are the best investments I've made. It's a great feeling knowing that they can keep in touch with friends and family without them trying the "hit and miss" method of calling them, waiting on letters to arrive, or dealing with slow internet connections. Although I proposed that this would be their birthday presents for the next several years, I have no intentions of ever making them pay for their own service.
Tips
Go with the cheapest satellite internet plan available. Especially for people coming off of dial up, even a "slow" or limited satellite internet connection is blazing fast!
