Description of service
I started using a grocery delivery service shortly after moving to New York - I just couldn't haul groceries home on the subway anymore due to aching hands and arms. The service I used is internet based and charges only $5 per delivery, with a $30 minimum order. I thought the prices would be higher than local stores, but they are actually very comparable. They have you set a two-hour window for delivery.
Review of Service
If you take the subway to a good grocery store, it is already $4 for the fares there and back. So four years later, I'm still using the service. They provide the freshest meats in the area which is important, and the produce is great too. Shopping by internet is most convenient thing - preventing impulse buys. They generally stick to the two hour window. Once or twice it's been way off (I once had them come at 1:30am!), but if you complain they will make it up to you. A couple of time eggs have been broken or a yogurt spilled - and I just submit a note to the service online and I'm almost automatically credited.
Tips
I'd highly recommend using a grocery delivery service in New York. In some areas, like mine in Washington Heights, it's hard to find clean, fresh meats in the local bodegas and markets. You can get really sick from bad meat and produce. You will also be exhausted if you try to haul home a bunch of groceries (especially beverages!) - and if you don't get that much, you end up having to go every couple days which can eat up your free time fast.
