Description of service
I got acupuncture for pain in my neck and shoulders, muscle stiffness and tension, and insomnia.
The acupuncturist inserted about 25 needles into my neck and back and hooked them up to some kind of electric apparatus which conducted electricity, and made the needles kind of jump. She offered my herbs, but it was a liquid solution that smelled much like a different acupuncturist's herbs, and I knew I couldn't stomach them, so I passed.
The appointment was $50.
Review of Service
It was the second time I had ever had this procedure done with the electrical stimulation, although by a different person, and it was still a strange experience. The muscles kind of twitched and it was uncomfortable, but then later my muscles felt much better.
The stiff muscles and pain was drastically reduced by the acupuncture, but it didn't really do anything for the insomnia. I was told that the herbs would help my insomnia, but I just couldn't stomach them, so it wouldn't help much if I couldn't get it in my system at all! If they had herbal pills, it would have been much easier to take.
Tips
Get recommendations for acupuncturists, since for most people, it is a little bit of a frightening experience anyway. If you're scared of needles, this might not be the way to attack your problem. The electric stimulation helped with muscle tension, but I'm not sure if it would help with other conditions. It didn't seem to help with my insomnia.
As with any health-related service, remember that you are paying and if anything is uncomfortable or painful, ask the practitioner to stop immediately.
