Description of service
I had acupuncture performed at an acupuncture school. The acupuncture was performed by a student, who was directly supervised by an instructor. The students at this school have varying levels of experience.
I filled out all of the intake forms, the student performed an intake interview with me, and I got acupuncture.
Review of Service
I was prepared for it being a school, and taking longer than other acupuncture appointments I have had. It did take much longer, partly because the student seemed to be really unsure about what she was doing. She was really hesitant, and because of this, I was really glad there was a supervisor present!
After the lengthy interview, the student acupuncturist inserted the acupuncture needles - again, she was a little hesitant, which is NOT what you want from someone sticking needles in you! But the supervisor made sure she was doing everything right.
I didn't go back, mostly because the appointment took so long that I didn't really have time for another appointment. It was hard to tell if the acupuncture itself was effective, since usually I need several appointments before I see a difference.
Tips
Just like beauty schools or any other trade schools, the focus is more on training the students than providing efficient service. This is fine as long as you go into it prepared. If you are willing to have a student acupuncturist and spend the time to wait around, you can save a lot of money!
The acupuncturist should be able to explain to you why they are doing each step of the process. If anything doesn't feel right, speak up immediately!
