Description of service
Prior to switching to digital telephone service through my local cable company in late 2006, I had a traditional land line phone through a national telephone company that used fiber optics for both their local and long distance service. For the $60.00 a month, I had unlimited local and long distance calling within the continental United States.
Review of Service
I had no complaints with my Fiber Optic telephone service. I never had any service issues or any reason to have a technician visit my home. When the power went out, I still had telephone service (unlike my current digital telephone service). I will say that the company itself was a pain to deal with. Anytime I had to deal with them via customer service, they were rude and the wait on hold was insane. I eventually switched to digital telephone service through my cable company as it saved me close to $40.00 a month for the same flexible calling plan.
Tips
If you do not have access to a digital telephone service provider, fiber optic land lines work great. I actually prefer them to the digital telephone service I currently have, but am not willing to pay the extra money (and they are more than $60.00 a month now too). It is my understanding that most traditional telephone companies use fiber optics for their communication technology, especially long distance. Definitely shop around. There are so many options now and so many companies offering unlimited calling that you should be able to find a good deal out there.
