Running a new fiber optic phone line underground  more... close row

Description of service

The local telephone company is upgrading their phone lines to fiber optic and I just built a new house and had to have the phone line run underground from a box at the road to a box located on the side of my house. Everything is underground. The local phone company done all of this and ran the line into my house. They did not use a contractor. Everything was taken care of through the phone company. The monthly cost of the service did not go up. I still pay $35 a month and that includes caller ID and call waiting with caller ID, not including long distance calls. The charge for coming and running the line through the yard and hooking it into the house was a one time fee of $65 dollars. After that fee, it was the same price as it had always been. I already had a phone, so I did not opt for the telephone companies equipment. Sometimes they offer customers telephones if they do not already have one. I did not need this, so I am unsure if that cost anything. Other options are now becoming available to customers, but it was new at the time I had it done.

Review of Service

Even though I have issues with out local telephone service, this time it was fast, easy and cheap. It was the lowest hook up fee that I had during the whole process of building the house. The guy came that morning and had this machine that dug a ditch, ran the line and covered it up at the same time. It was fast and you could not even tell where he had done it. After he ran the line to my house, he ran the line under my house and hooked it to the main connection. That was it. It was that simple. It was well worth the price. It was $375 cheaper than it was for me to get the water department to come out and turn a screw. I think the fiber optic lines are clearer and my phone does not go out every time the wind blows like before. Hopefully, when it snows this winter, my phone will not go out. Having the lines ran underground has a neater look also. They are implementing more options with the fiber optic line, like Cable TV. I am waiting to see what others say about this service before I try it.

Tips

If you live in this area, you do not have a choice of phone providers. Your only option is to use this service or only use your cell phone. There are still some places in their coverage area that has not been upgraded to fiber optic yet, but I assume it is coming. Opting to run utility lines underground cost a little more, but well worth it. I went out right after they left and I could not even tell anyone had done anything to my yard. It was amazing. My phone has not gone out one time since they upgraded to fiber optic. I would advise that you get all your major landscaping finished before they come put the lines in. The blades from a bulldozer could cut into the lines. I assume if that happened, you would have to pay for it. Also, make sure you build your house tall enough for someone to get under it. It was a little tight for that guy to fit under there and he was of average build. Have the phone line ran last. If your electric is also ran underground, the phone line will go on top of it. I think there is 2 feet between them. I did the phone last, right before we planted grass and flower beds.
