Description of service
The price was the cost over and above the groceries to have a neighborhood boy pickup and deliver some groceries for my mother one weekend I was unable to go over and drop them off.
Review of Service
My mother is quite old and though she can get around alright and mostly take care of herself, she can't drive and she lives too far from the grocery store to walk to easily. Since she's not interested in moving in with us, we've since helped her move into a place where she's more comfortable walking everywhere she needs to go. But in the mean time we took her to go shopping or picked some stuff up for her
One weekend, though, we had to go out of town and couldn't do any of that. So we asked a neighborhood kid my mother was friendly with to pick up some groceries that weekend. We gave him about $100 and told him to keep what he thought was fair after he bought the groceries. The groceries cost only about $60 so it was a nice surprise that he only kept $10 and returned the change to my mother when he dropped off the groceries.
And it seems the kid did alright in picking out the fruits and vegetables as my mother never hesitates to let us know something got too ripe too quick or went bad too quick. Politely, of course.
Tips
A lot of grocery stores seem to offer this service (at least around here), but don't really advertise the fact that they do. If you feel you need some stuff delivered, give the local grocery a call, they may be able to help for a nominal cost. Be sure to have a list ready of the stuff you want and note whether you'll accept substitutions on stuff they can't find or whether you'd rather they simply skip the items that are out of stock.
Going with a neighborhood kid was a lark. We've had good luck with neighborhood kids, paying them to do a variety things: washing cars, walking doges, etc. And haven't really had any problems.
