the Cost of Replacing a Roof

My mother-in-law had her roof repaired (rotten areas, especially around the eves and porch area) and new shingles installed last summer for $2500.

My mother-in-law's roofers showed up at the crack of dawn and were finished by mid-afternoon. The time spent on repairing the rotten areas slowed them down an extra 2 hours or so, according to the roofing company owner. These roofers actually did a good job at picking up after themselves, as nobody got the dreaded "day after" flat tire from roofing tacks.

First off, always check references. Then, once you find someone that you think you'd like to use, ask for a quote. If you know of someone else that needs similar work, see if both of you can get a discount if you both use the same company (this is what we did, although we chose metal roofing).

Keep in mind that a quote is an educated guess. Sometimes problems will be found that weren't obvious when the initial quote was given. Make sure you have enough funding to cover even the worst case scenario (and yes, you can even get a quote on "what if", as my mother-in-law did).
