Description of service
The service included the hardware to connect a phone to my broadband Internet ISP, and the service of the VOIP call itself. I had to supply and use my own standard phone. Any type of standard phone can be used, and in my case I used a cordless phone with built-in answering machine. The answer machine functioned just as well as it did with a land line connection. The hardware could be connected to either a broadband modem or a router connected to the modem.
Review of Service
The quality of the calls was equal to that of a land line phone. I have used Internet voice chatting before, and the service from the VOIP service far exceeded that. The sound quality was not flat or halted, and was not one-way at a time, like a CB radio. The service included an incoming phone number, so calls could be received as well as made. In fact, the service functioned exactly as a standard land line. Other features of the service included voice message mailbox, caller ID, call forwarding, call waiting, etc.
Tips
The phone number you are provided with from this service is connected to the hardware, and not to the location. This means that you can unplug it from your home computer network, and plug it in to a computer network someplace else and will retain the same phone number. This is very useful for people who know they will be moving soon or often. It is also good for people who travel and for those in temporary housing, such as a college dorm. Cell phones provide this mobility also, but at a much higher price.
