Description of service
It was a wet cleaning and scrubbing of the carpet in the entire house by a crew of three. Other services were available from spot cleaning to regular cleaning of high-traffic commercial area. Prices were based on square footage.
Though "dry" cleaning (with chemical solvents like those used in dry cleaning clothes as opposed to wet cleaning with detergent and water) wasn't available at the company we used, we saw others that did offer that service.
Review of Service
I'm very happy with the service. We have a dog and several cats and the carpets came out immaculate. They even got the especially dirty bit of carpet right by the front door. The entire house smelled fresh.
The crew of three arrived at the scheduled time (actually a couple minutes early) with an industrial vacuum cleaner and carpet scrubbers and got to business. We had, as requested by the cleaning company, tidied all the rooms with carpet of papers and toys and stuff, but the cleaning crew was willing to move all but the heaviest furniture (the TV and stereo hutch in the living room) clean the carpets underneath.
The total cleaning time was about two hours.
Tips
If the carpet is wet-cleaned you may want to have fans blowing air to speed drying, particularly in regions of the country where mildew is common (fortunately Phoenix isn't one of those, but we ran fans in the darker hallways and they dried faster than the big, bright, open living room with windows open).
Also, aside from carpet cleaning, floors are easier to keep clean if shoes are dedicated to outside use only because they tend to track in dirt and grime all over the floors inside. And area rugs can be used to help limit the dirt accumulation in high traffic areas. We've decided to put one by our front door so we can take our shoes off inside.
