Description of service
Many people would never expect to send their child for counseling services. However, it is good to know that professionals dedicated to children exist. The credentials of these professionals vary from PHD's to nurses to social workers. You should discuss your child's problem with his doctor or school to determine the best provider for outside counseling services.
Review of Service
My son was having problems with school work and social activities. I didn't really think it was too out of the ordinary for his age group but wanted a second opinion. I choose a provider who used animal assisted therapy. She met with my son for an hour a week using a dog to help initiate communication. As they trained the dog together, she used the dogs emotions to launch conversations about feelings and what happening at school. Training the dog also taught patience and self control. It was a good experience and my son only needed to attend for eight weeks. It good to know if any problems should arise in the future I already have established a relationship with this counselor.
Tips
Insurance companies may pay for some of your childs counseling services. Often preapproval is required. In my case, I was approved for eight sessions and would only be responsible for a ten percent co-pay. If you have no insurance or means to pay for services you should check with your school and community services department. Often programs are available for those who cannot pay the full cost. If your child's situation is serious, definitely seek out help for your child and worry about the cost later.
