Description of service
During our dog's annual physical exam, our veterinarian examined the dog's teeth and recommended a full dental cleaning to avoid future problems. We had previously had her teeth cleaned a few years earlier, so we were comfortable with the procedure and had it done. The work was completed by a dental specialist and the total cost was $350 for all time and labor, medication, anesthesia and office time.
Review of Service
We had to drop our dog off at the vet's office at 8:00 am and had to keep food and water from her for 12 hours in advance of the appointment. The dental cleaning was done in the morning and we were able to pick her up around 3:00 pm after the anesthesia wore off and she had more energy. There is always a concern when an animal undergoes surgery or dental care, but our veterinarian explained the procedure to me in great detail and let me know the benefits of the treatment along with the possible problems. Our dog really had a lot of tartar and plaque on her teeth, which causes bad breath and can cause some health problems. When we picked her up, her teeth were much better and so the price of the service was acceptable, even though it is very expensive. We were happy that she came out of the cleaning in fine shape and were satisfied with the service.
Tips
Dental care is dangerous, but there are a lot of health problems caused by lack of care so it is an important decision. Don't clean too often, especially because of the cost, but be sure to have the teeth cleaned before your dog turns 7, which is when the risk increases from the use of anesthesia. Brushing your dog's teeth every few days is also a good way to keep them clean.
