I paid for a rental car that I picked up at and returned to the Hilton Head airport. The rental cost $22.89 per day minus a $5.00 total discount that I received because of my membership in their loyalty program. The taxes imposed totaled just under $9.00. I did not prepay any gas - just returned it full as I received it.
Review of Service
My overall experience with this rental was negative. First, I should say that I have always been treated well by this company in the past. This time was a clear exception. First, they told me that the car was in the long-term parking lot without giving me directions as to exactly where it was. I didn't think it would be difficult to find until I went to get it. I had to keep pressing the door open button and look for the flashing car. When I got to the car, it reeked of cigarettes and had not been cleaned. There was dirt, receipts, etc. in the crevices of the car. Clearly no one had cleaned it. I did not want to waste time returning the car so I went ahead and took it. I called customer service at their 800 number and explained the issue. The slightly helpful agent gave me a free credit for one day on a future rental. That was easier than dealing with the "manager" of the airport location, with whom I would have had to deal with if I wanted a credit on this rental period.
Tips
If you have a problem with a car, call the 800 number and request that they give you some sort of consideration in the form of a credit. This shouldn't be abused. However, if the company doesn't do their duty to you as a customer, they owe you something.
