the Cost of Pet Sitting

I needed an in home service to take care of my small dog while we were out of town (extended weekend). The total cost was $200 - I paid the sitter a tip of $25, and the total cost of the care was $175 over a four day period. The service included the in home sitter visiting twice per day, in the morning by 8 a.m. and in the evening by 8 p.m. She made sure my dog had fresh water (twice daily) and fed the dog (once per day). She also took the dog for a walk in the morning (20 minutes) and then let her out (in the backyard, which is fenced) in the evening.

This particular service came highly recommended by dog-loving friends. The service was excellent and as far as I know, there are several different contractors who take care of people's animals. When I telephoned the service to get initial information, I was greeted warmly and they gave me a quote right away. The contractor who actually took care of my dog came to my home for an overview the next day. She was very good with my dog, who is a small breed and a bit shy. This lady was able to get my dog involved and she even took my doggie for a short walk right then and there! I was completely comfortable with the situation when I left town, and when I returned, my dog was happy, healthy and well cared for. I like that I did not have to board my dog or take her to a place she was not familiar with. Since she is shy, that is traumatic for her. We travel often, every month, and sometimes we are not able to take our dog with us. I love this service and will happily use them again.

I did not contact more than one service as this entity came recommended by friends, but I would advise calling several agencies or individuals to get quotes and information so you can make an informed choice. I do know that depending upon who you hire, prices can vary. If going through an agency, make sure they are bonded and that the handlers are familiar with your breed of dog, and are comfortable with your animal. Get this person to come visit your dog while you are still at home. You are trusting this person with not only your dog, but the keys to your home! If anything does not seem right - go back to square one!
