Description of service
I had an emergency room visit after a spill with a horse. I was very pleased with the overall service. The ER staff were attentive, quick to help me and timely in providing answers to tests and pain control. The total bill was right at $5000, but I only paid my emergency room copay of $100.
Review of Service
I was seen at a large, metropolitan emergency room that is part of a local chain of hospitals. This hospital is known in the region for excellent trauma care and charity service. Although the staff was very busy, they attended to my needs quickly and efficiently. I was lucky that my injury was not life threatening or required a hospital admission, but I still wanted to make sure that I did not have lasting injuries. I had various xrays and a CT scan, and the physician was able to get back with me about a diagnosis within an hour, which I felt was good time for xray and CT scan readings. I was medicated for my pain promptly and felt that the nursing staff really cared about how I felt. My nurse was wonderful.
Tips
I think that emergency rooms are very competitive about keeping their "clients" happy. Gone are the days of medical staff vs. patient - the patient is in charge of their health care and considered a valuable partner in treatment. Everything that the medical staff is doing should be explained to you, and if you do not understand, ask for a better explanation. Be informed and have a family member or friend with you to advocate.
