Description of service
The cost was to repair a torn lace hole by replacing the bit of leather the hole was punched into.
The service was done by a full service cobbler. They have a minimum charge of $5 for their work.
Review of Service
I tore out a lace hole in my favorite dress shoes putting them in the morning about a week ago. After laughing at the silliness of it, I grabbed another pair of shoes and put them on, and tossed the others in a shopping bag to take to the cobbler.
Cobbler quoted me a reasonable price, but said it'd take a few days to get the work done right.
It's not perfect. I can tell the difference between the factory stitch work and the work the cobbler did. Understandably the cobbler's work isn't quite as fine as the factory work, but it looks fine from more than a couple feet away as they matched the texture and color of the leather quite well. They even polished the shoes, after letting me inspect the work (the polish could have hidden color variations).
Tips
Good dress shoes are expensive, don't give up on them easily. But don't give them to just any cobbler to fix. See if your friends have found good ones, or search online for reviews of local shops.
